5 questions to ask yourself before adopting from a shelter

Published on June 2nd 2021

Are you looking for a new companion? Adopting from a shelter is a great way to support the animal cause and give an abandoned cat or dog a second chance. However, taking in an animal can be challenging! Here are some questions to ask yourself before adopting from a shelter.

1. What type of animal are you looking for?

Everyone has a dream dog or cat! Whether it's a breed, color or temperament, the search for the perfect pet can be exhaustive. When it comes to shelter pets, it's often nearly impossible to find one that fits all these criteria. There is a wide variety of colors, mixed breeds, ages and behaviors. Our advice is to keep an open mind and look for an animal based on your lifestyle, not on their physical appearance!

2. Do you have the financial means?

It's no secret that adopting from a shelter is a very economical option! The adoption fee always includes spaying or neutering, a first dose of vaccines and deworming, and a microchip. However, even though the cost of adoption is very affordable, you still need to take into consideration future expenses.

A shelter animal can often have a few health issues that will need to be explored following adoption. Shelter dogs will sometimes have behavioral issues to work on, so be prepared to invest in behavioral therapy or obedience classes. And don't forget about the daily costs associated with animals: quality food, annual vet, accessories, grooming, etc.

3. Do you have the time and energy?

Shelter animals may have had a difficult past before joining your family. Often, we have no idea what their habits are like in a home. It’s important to adopt with the understanding that it may take a lot of work to allow the animal to make a successful transition. Always allow at least 3 months for a pet to feel comfortable in their new routine and take the challenges of adjustment in stride!

4. Is the pet right for your family?

It's important to know your family's needs before adopting from a shelter. Obviously, since most of our animals are found as strays, there is no way to know how they will fit in with your family. If you have young children or other pets at home, ask the shelter's counselors for advice on finding the perfect, safe match. Assess your daily routine in terms of time and activities to determine if your lifestyle would be ideal for a calm or active pet.

5. Are you ready for a long-term commitment?

Pets are for life! Animals in shelters have already been abandoned at least once, so your decision to adopt should be well thought out. When you decide to give a shelter animal a chance, you must consider its special needs and the adaptation period, which is not always easy. In the end, your pet will thank you for saving its life!
